Oral delivery of biopharmaceuticals

31. May @ 14:30 - 17:00

May 31st 2018, 14.30-16.55
Benzon Auditorium, Department of Pharmacy, University of Copenhagen
Universitetsparken 2, Copenhagen

Biopharmaceuticals, such as peptides and proteins, including antibodies, are very attractive drug substances from a therapeutics perspective. Research within academia and the pharmaceutical industry is evolving and new treatments of severe, chronic and lifethreatening diseases such as cancer, inflammation, and diabetes are evident. Due to their physicochemical properties, biopharmaceuticals are conventionally administered by injection although from a patient´s perspective, oral administration is preferred.

However, it is a huge challenge to develop an oral dosage form that efficiently delivers biopharmaceuticals to the absorption site in the gastro-intestinal tract and at the same time facilitates drug transport across various biological barriers. Currently, a lot of effort and research is concentrated on developing drug delivery systems that enable oral delivery of selected biopharmaceuticals. This meeting will highlight the current state within this research field discussing selected technologies and strategies.

14:30 – 14:35 Welcome and introduction
